Hello readers,
Hope you, your family, and friends are all doing well. It’s a new day and we should all be grateful for what we have, especially our health.
Today, I will blog on how I joined the field of social media. I will also walk you through how I navigate in a world of distraction. I hope my journey will encourage you in your walk in life.
What led you to go in the field Social Media?
In my years back in the university, where I did my Masters degree in Integrated Studies, I was part of the graduate student association where I held the role of Vice President, Academics. I supported graduate students and used our social media accounts to communicate to our members. That’s where my interest in corporate social media began.
Prior to completing my Masters Degree, I was was hired as a full time bilingual social media specialist, where I worked full time in the field for 7 years.
I saw how social media became a part of my personal and professional life, but had to separate my personal life from my professional life. Making sure I created some boundaries between using social media for my personal and professional life.
As part of my personal development, I took a certification program in social media compliance management and saw the benefits it brought into my personal and professional life.
I also started a blog to share my experience on social media compliance management. Though I have changed careers to user or digital experience research, I still offer social media consulting services and continue blogging.
How do you navigate as a Kingdom citizen (Christian) in a world of distraction?
1. Living intentionally in all that I do. Being present, fully engaged or committed. This means being a part of the moment and not missing out in life. I have to live intentionally in my family, job, business, fitness, hobbies, and spiritual life. Basically everything I do has to be intentional, so I am not distracted in life.
2. Putting my phone asides in my home office drawer before starting my work day or far from sight at home helps in staying from distraction. I Turn off my phone apps notifications. I always have my phone on silent mode because at the end of a work day, I don’t realized the phone is on silent mode. I usually don’t react to the ding sound of notifications unless the customize ring notifications for my business that will make me action it.
4. Understanding my phone screen time on my phone setting and time management to keep me accountable. Here’s a screenshot of my iPhone screen time the week of April 18, 2021. This report tells me how much time I spend on my phone, my screen time activities, the number of times I pick up my phone, as well as my average notifications.

I did set up the downtime in my iPhone screen from 10 P.M to 7 A.M. This helps me stay away from my phone and prepares my body for bedtime. I find that when I am not on my phone at 10 P.M. I have a good bedtime routine. I actually sleep like a baby and get about 7-8 hours sleep.
I do set up app limits for my most used apps. This helps me to control my time spent on those apps. My most used app is WhatsApp cause I do have friends and family outside Canada. This app is safe and affordable to connect with friends, as well as family members in Canada and outside of Canada.
In my downtime period, I did set up some apps that I always allow, so I can use it at all time in case of an emergency.
In the Screen Time you can also set communications and time limit, as well as content & privacy restrictions. If your children have an iPhone or you share your iPhone with them, I recommend setting up the content & privacy restrictions and using a screen time passcode.
3. Understanding my social media usage, and analytics. In my iPhone Screen Time, I get to track all my phone activities. The screen shot below shows my weekly phone activities. The graph below shows my time spent on social (social media), productivity & finance and entertainment or games the week of April 18, 2021. Please note that this screen time report changes every week depending on my usage and I can always check my last two weeks report to evaluate my screen time usage.

Every Sunday morning, I get a weekly report of my screen time. The following screenshot is my screen time the week of April 18th to April 25th

5. Notifications may seem to be so distracting, and when lured by it you may missed out on doing what you hoped to fulfill earlier. To avoid that from happening, I turn off my notifications. I only check my notifications when I use the apps. The screenshot below show how you can manage your notifications in your phone settings.

Conclusion
In summary, I shared my journey on what led me into the social media field and my career changes into user or digital experience research. I also shared my ways of navigating as a Christian in a world of distraction.

It’s important that we have a plan in place to help us control our social media usage to avoid distractions. I set specific time in my calendar as social media time, and once that is done I move on to my day to day activities. I can’t say I am fasting from social media or staying away from social media. When you’re back, what do you do then? Do you go back to your same ways or you change your social usage? Simply know your priorities while setting up some time for social in your calendar and limiting your usage.
If we’re being controlled by social media or spend more time on social media then our attention is on everything but God. That means we’re giving so much power to social media to control our lives and it becomes an addiction that has a sour taste and guilt feeling. I don’t want that and trust you don’t want that too. Actually, social media is a part of my personal, business and professional life, but I choose to be in control of how I manage my social media usage.
Just as in Ecclesiastes 3:1-7 that talks about time usage, I will say there’s a time to use social media and a time to refrain from using social media. As such, I have the power to make that happen and so do you.
As a Christian, I have to allow God to speak to me by reading the bible and asking on the Holy Spirit to guide me in meditating on the word of God. Having a personal encounter with the Holy Spirit makes me independent spiritually and not waiting on someone to tell me what I have to do.
Who I follow on social media says a lot about me and how much impact they have on me. We should be careful of who we follow on social media, what groups we join and how much of our time we invest on the people or companies we follow. In so doing, we give ourselves time to do other things offline.
We’re all leaders and called with great gifts to fellowship together in the mist of God. We should love and support one another. Don’t be fearful of anything cause God got you and will always be with you no matter what. Do what God has placed in your heart and love somebody while leaving intentionally.
